The engine room
A simple request to the Captain or the Chief Engineer is usually enough to earn you a visit to the engine room. On the MSC Ilona, the engineer was very pleasent and shared with us all we wanted to know. For instance, we learned about the engine, the turbine, the fuel consumption, the emergency generator, the coolant system, the maintenance opperations, and all about the environmentally critical issue of the right fuel.
The bridge of the MSC Ilona
On the bridge you may receive as well from the Captain or the current responsible officer all the information about steering and the exact route taken by the cargo ship. Even a look in the detailed logbook or on the nautical chart gives revealing answers.
The MSC Ilona - some facts of Freighter Travel
