Overview Sailing SOUTH 2024 Following in the Antarctic footsteps of Shackleton with SV Selma Expeditions "150 years Shackleton" Sailing Expedition:Route: Ushuaia – Cape Hoorn – Drake-Passage – Antarctic Peninsula – Graham Land – South Shetland Islands – Elephant Island – Scotia Sea – South Georgia – Port Stanley/ Falkland IslandsTravel dates: 04.02.2024 - 20.03.2024Duration: 46 daysFare from: 21.500€ A unique opportunity: proven yacht, experienced skipper, small crewShackleton advertised in the London Times in 1913 in search of suitable men for the crew of his expedition to cross Antarctica:"Men wanted for dangerous voyage. Low pay, bitter cold, long months in total darkness, constant danger, return uncertain. Honor and recognition if successful."Despite this honest and unembellished perspective, the number of applicants (5,000) greatly exceeded the crew needed (56 on two ships). The expedition, however, failed before it really began: Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, became trapped in the ice and sank, but the "Boss," as his men respectfully called him, ensured that all of them returned alive with one of the most incredible rescues in polar history. In our case, the prospects are not quite so dangerous: we are traveling in the Antarctic summer and will not need two years to return. But we too want to sail into the rough Southern Ocean and follow in Shackleton's footsteps - on the occasion of his 150th birthday, 110 years after him and the brave crew of the Endurance. We want to cross the infamous Drake Passage and sail through the furious 50s and screaming 60s on the stormiest of oceans. We will explore the magnificent ice and glacier world of the Antarctic Peninsula, set foot on the seventh continent, marvel at its incomparable wildlife. We want to set our course - ice permitting - to the Weddell Sea with its iceberg giants, the volcanic islands of the South Shetland Islands and - following the James Caird with Shackleton, Worsley & Co - sail from Elephant Island to South Georgia. There we want to trace their footsteps and those of the former whaling stations, as well as discover the unique biodiversity of this subantarctic island, to finally end our journey - rich in experiences and adventures - in the Falklands.
